La Valle dei Mocheni/ Passo Redebus and berrry picking

Today I' m going to write about Passo Redebus,  where we went for a walk at the end of August.

The Mocheni Valley or la Valle dei Mocheni is famous for its ethnic minority of Mocheni who have their own distinctive culture and language of a Germanic origin. This blog is about where to go for walks with your children around Trentino and South Tyrol, so I'm not going to write anything more on the subject of the Mocheni culture. You'll find the information on other websites.

We started off at the car park of Passo Redebus and we followed an asphalt road (closed for cars) up to malga Pez at 1583 m asl. The road was very well sign posted. It's  about 3.5 km long and it took us about 40 mins. It was a very easy walk, suitable for strollers. Malga Pez is a good place for a picnic.

If you want to continue, there are indications for Malga Combroncoi (tel. 0461 540035 or mobile 329.8016326).
We were there during the week when malga Pez was closed. You can see from the pictures that we did not have great weather that day so we decided to go back to the car. However we did see a sign at the car park of Passo Redebus that Malga Combroncoi was open for lunch every day, closed after 6pm in the summer months.
From malga Pez you get a good view of Pergine Valsugana and the surroundings. Malga Pez did not have any playground and since it was closed I cannot write about other facilities it offered.

I recommend this walk for those of you who like going berry picking (from June to August). The valley together with the town of Sant' Orsola are famous around Italy for producing raspberries, strawberries etc. If you pass by Sant' Orsola between May and September you may want to stop at the big shop selling various kinds of berries. You'll spot the shop easily from the road.

Apart from berries the place is also good for mushroom picking and indeed, when we were there in August we saw some people with baskets full of mushrooms. (If you are not a Trentino resident then you must have a special license for picking.)

We have never been to Malga Pez in winter but from the information we had found on the Internet it seems that you can get there only with snowshoes or skis.

Here's an alternative suggestion of what to do in Val dei Mocheni: we have just discovered on internet the existance of the "sentiero dei piccoli frutti".It's a 10 km walk past strawberry, raspberry, blueberry and blackberry fields. It starts at the Visitors' Centre/ Centro Visitatori "Scopri Sant'Orsola" in Pergine Valsugana and it leads up to Canezza in localita "le Giare".

The Centre is open from 3 June till 30 September, from Monday till Saturday:
9.00 – 12.00 | 16.00 – 19.00. IT IS CLOSED ON WEDNESDAYS AND SUNDAYS. The address is:
Via Lagorai, 135 | Pergine Valsugana
Tel. 0461 518170

The centre offers a bike rental service and it's free of charge, however you have to book it beforehand. (tel. 0461 51870)

How to get there: by car from Trento follow the Valsugana SS47 towards Pergine. It's little over 20 km and it takes about 20 mins. From Pergine centre follow the sign for Valle dei Mocheni, pass by Sant'Orsola until you get to Passo Redebus and you see a free of charge car park;

Duration: from half a day to one day trip (we did see the indications for a giro delle malghe/ a walk around the various malghe);

Level: easy, suitable for pushchairs;

Refreshments and toilet facilities: malga Pez and Combroncoi in summer or bring your own stuff;

Useful websites: please let me know if you find any.
